An anti-gay bill drafted in response to same-sex marriage minutes ago passed the Indiana House, and will head to the governor’s desk. Will he sign or veto it?
Last week an Indiana House committee passed an anti-gay, pro-discrimination bill designed to allow anyone – including businesses – to discriminate against anyone else, merely by citing their sincerely held religious beliefs. The bill, SB-101, in theory could allow an emergency medical technician (EMT), nurse, doctor, or other medical professional to refuse to treat an LGBT person. And it could allow any business owner, say, a bake shop or photographer, to refuse to work on a same-sex wedding.
The bill passed 63-31.
GOP Gov. Mike Pence has already stated he will sign the bill if it gets to his desk.
The bill’s language is so broad that it could allow any person whose religious beliefs mandate the subordination of women to refuse to serve them in a restaurant, in a DMV, or at a local store.Â
Yes!! “There is a threat to religion in this state, and this bill is part of it!” #SB101

“It basically says to a group of people that you’re second-rate, you don’t matter, and I don’t have to serve you,” lamented Democratic Rep. Scott Pelath during today’s debate. He also warned that the legislation “does nothing but create paychecks for lawyers.”
— James Gherardi (@JamesGherardi) March 23, 2015
Democratic Rep. Ed Delaney reminded his colleagues that his “prophet had dinner with hookers,” and asked if by doing so, was he “blessing” them.
“This bill is intended to increase conflict” Delaney warned.
Republican State Rep. Bruce Borders explained to his colleagues why he supports the bill. “Our businesses can be just as much a church as our church is.”Â
Democratic Rep. Linda Lawson warned the bill will end up in court, “and you know it will.”
“We’re going to cost our state a lot of money,” she also warned, adding, “we’re meddling with lives.”
Some tweets from the debate:
So Rep. Washburne wants men to be able to beat women if that is their religious belief? #SB101

911 Called After Black Teens Attacked by Knife-Wielding Homeless Man – Cops Show Up and Draw Guns on the Kids
The L.A. County Sheriffs’ Dept. is once again under fire after witnesses say three Black teens were attacked by a homeless man wielding a knife. 911 was called and the police showed up – drawing at least one assault rifle and several guns on at least one of the teenagers.
This video show witnesses screaming at police, who appear entirely uninterested in hearing their accounts, and telling them to step back.
“It’s the other guy!” one bystander can be heard repeatedly yelling at the police.
“Put your guns down,” another person urges. “They’re kids.”
Off camera, one person repeatedly tells the teens to “put your hands up,” clearly afraid the child will be shot. “They don’t care cause they Black.”
“They didn’t do nothing at all,” they add.
“It was not them,” another bystander says.
“They’re just kids,” says another.
“Tammi Collins, the mother of one of the teens, says her son and a couple of friends were sitting at a bus stop when a homeless man asked if they had any crack and then tried to steal their stuff,” TMZ reports. “She says the man became super aggro, ripped his shirt off and pulled a knife on them, and attempted to stab them. She says the kids fended the man off with their skateboards.”
At least four police vehicles can be seen in the video.
No arrests were made, but in the video one teen can be seen on his knees, his hands up, appearing to be handcuffed. The homeless person was not found.
“The L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. tells TMZ, the 911 call came in as an assault with a deadly weapon,” TMZ reports. “specifically, 2 adult males hitting another man with a skateboard. The kids were detained and after deputies spoke with them and witnesses, they were released and no arrests were made. The Dept. doesn’t know what happened to the homeless man.”

Trump-Loving ‘True Victim of the Pandemic’ Nikki Haley Slammed for Complaining Her Birthday Popcorn Order Was Late
Nikki Haley is once again being widely mocked for a tweet. A few weeks ago it was this tweet, which basically was a very effective ad for Joe Biden:
If Biden wins in November, it’s clear that Warren will significantly shape his approach — on domestic policy in particular — whether or not her name’s on the ticket.https://t.co/odrqI0eIAJ
— Nikki Haley (@NikkiHaley) July 17, 2020
Now, it’s something far less political – or is it?
Monday morning President Donald Trump’s former U.S. Ambassador to the UN complained about… late birthday popcorn.
This one tweet seems to sum up the opinions of many:
Local woman stumps for man who destroys the postal service, then gets angry when her popcorn shipped via postal service doesn’t arrive on time. https://t.co/CK1RC1QBNK
— Bryan 🇺🇸 #PoliceThePolice (@swimmerbr78) August 10, 2020
Many mocked Haley for being tone deaf to Trump’s destruction of the U.S. Postal Service.
Republicans: Trump is bringing much needed reform to the Postal Service! Who cares if letters are a little delayed?
Also Republicans: where the fuck is my popcorn? https://t.co/nS0GudKsZN
— Pé (@4everNeverTrump) August 10, 2020
It looks like that company uses USPS for some of its deliveries. Hmmm … might wanna take it up with whoever’s running the postal service these days. https://t.co/DAMyEXUT0W
— Kaili Joy Gray (@KailiJoy) August 10, 2020
Did you try to send this order via USPS? Because Nikki, there are some things you should probably read up on … https://t.co/cttrnP9qb9
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) August 10, 2020
Were these deliveries made through the USPS, because if so, you may want to sit down. https://t.co/O6KdNqHdid

160,000 people are dead and your guy sabotaged the postal service, Nikki. https://t.co/NsCfuZatAT

Many reminded the former Republican governor of South Carolina that we’re in the middle of a pandemic.

Yes let’s hurt a business for no reason during a pandemic where over 160k people have died. Great priorities here. https://t.co/LM53ARLPiH
— Emily C. Singer (@CahnEmily) August 10, 2020
Businesses are struggling, people are dying, everybody’s life has been turned upside down, but let’s all stop to say a prayer for @NikkiHaley after her screwed up popcorn order. https://t.co/GQCee92NIk

What a piece of work.
People are still waiting for their unemployment checks and stimulus payments, about to be evicted, but please do go on about… popcorn. https://t.co/AeO6P1VrFq

Many mocked her for her horrible record or priorities:

Many mocked her for her support of President Donald Trump:
I was disappointed when you wholeheartedly backed an aspiring authoritarian. #disappointednephew

And some, well, just mocked her for being cheap:

Fox & Friends Furious ‘Gym Owners Are Dying,’ Because ‘Politicians’
“Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade expressed anger Monday morning over gyms that are not allowed to re-open, or have to restrict the number of people allowed inside during the coronavirus pandemic. The number of COVID-19 cases in the country has doubled in just a few weeks to over 5 million.
“They’re dying. These gym owners are dying,” Kilmeade told his Fox News viewers, with not even a shred of understanding that in reality, 165,000 Americans have literally died from the virus.
“They have small margins anyway and they can’t do anything because these politicians won’t let ’em,” Kilmeade, clearly angry, snarled.
Kilmeade’s guest, “Body by Jake” creator Jake Steinfeld, told viewers, “Don’t quit,” and “be dilligent.”
But as soon as he started to give tips on how to stay healthy at home, which he said is “so important,” Kilmeade tried to cut him off.
“Gotcha,” Kilmeade said.
