Watch: Jon Stewart Breaks The News To His Audience He’s Leaving

Watch as Jon Stewart tells his audience he’s leaving “The Daily Show” in a heartfelt speech.

Early Tuesday evening Comedy Central sent a tweet that shocked many people:

Yes, Jon Stewart is leaving “The Daily Show,” after 17 years of delivering a unique blend of comedy, satire, news, and opinion.

The news was so stunning that cable news covered it more than some world events. MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell had an entire panel, including Rachel Maddow, and devoted much of his show to discussing Stewart’s leaving and the impact he made, and the impact that change will have.

Stewart, through some tears, told his audience who did not know – the Comedy Central public announcement was made as he was taping his show – that he looks forward to “having dinner with my family on a school night” because he hears “they’re lovely people.” It is “time for someone else to have” the opportunity to pilot the show, he said.

He also has a lot of ideas for what he wants to do next, he said, adding, “This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host.”

“It’s been an absolute privilege,” Stewart said. “It’s been the honor of my professional life.”
