Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore admits his position on blocking same-sex marriage licenses has to do with sexual preference and not the law.
In a heated, lengthy, and fiery debate (video above), Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore was pummeled, respectfully, by CNN “New Day” host Chris Como Thursday morning. By the time it was over, Moore admitted one of the reasons why he directed all 67 Alabama probate judges to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
“I had to do this,” Moore told Cuomo. “This is not about the law, it’s about sexual preference overcoming an institution which has existed in our state, in our United States for centuries, and I think it’s wrong.”
Later, Moore told Cuomo it was about the law, claiming that “one lone [federal] judge… has no power or authority” over the probate judges, who issue all marriage licenses in the state.
Cuomo also slammed Moore for “clinging to a definition of marriage that is ‘divine.'” Cuomo cited Moore’s letter to Gov. Robert Bentley, in which the Chief Justice wrote, “the laws of this state have always recognized the Biblical admonition state by our Lord.”
Insisting that rights come from god, Moore told Cuomo the Supreme Court cannot “invent a definition of marriage.”
“You are putting God before the laws of man,” Cuomo responded. “That’s not what we do in this country. That’s not how it works.”
