Roy Moore Defends Blocking Gay Marriage: Could Lead To ‘Men And Their Daughters’ (Video)
Watch as Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore claims that same-sex marriage could lead to incest and polygamy.
Roy Moore told ABC News this week that marriage is a states’ rights issue, and if America lets same-sex couples marry, incest and polygamy could be next. The 67-year old Republican Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice is “absolutely notâ€Â worried about ending up on the wrong side of history.
On Sunday, defying a federal court judge, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, and in advance of a Supreme Court refusal to halt same-sex couples from obtaining marriage licenses and marrying, Moore issued a directive to all 67 probate judges across the state: do not allow same-sex couples to marry.
Without that instruction, indeed, that license to discriminate, there would have been no legal confusion. But his order, compounded by Governor Robert Bentley’s refusal to take any action against any probate judge who either refuses to grant licenses or who grants licenses to same-sex couples, threw Alabama into mass confusion Monday.
As of Tuesday morning, only 16 of 67 counties were allowing same-sex couples to wed.
Moore explains why, as Raw Story reports, he blocked judges from fulfilling their duty.
“Do they stop with one man and one man or one woman and one woman?†Moore asked ABC News. “Or do they go to multiple marriages? Or do they go to marriages between men and their daughters or women and their sons?â€
He also insisted that “the definition of the word marriage is not found within the powers designated to the federal government,” and used that claim to bolster his argument that he is not bound by a federal judge’s ruling, nor are the judges who report to him, he claims.
