‘I Believe In Traditional Marriage’: Jeb Bush Wants You To Know There’s Been No Evolving
Likely GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush today put the rumors to rest.
This week, in the run up to CPAC, the media has been attempting to claim that Jeb Bush might actually support same-sex marriage.Â
First came the news that the likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate hired a communications professional, Tim Miller, who is openly gay. That was followed Thursday by an article by Buzzfeed’s McKay Coppins, “Jeb Bush, 2016’s Gay-Friendly Republican.”
Despite acknowledging that the elder Bush brother supports only “traditional marriage,” but sees it as a states’ rights issue, Coppins wrote, “inside Bush’s orbit, some believe his personal feelings on the subject may have evolved beyond his on-the-record statements.”
Three Republican supporters who have recently spoken with Bush as he’s blitzed the GOP fundraising circuit told BuzzFeed News they came away with the impression that on the question of marriage equality, he was supportive at best and agnostic at worst.
“He wants to do the respectful, human thing,†said one of the Republicans, a donor who requested anonymity to comment on private conversations.
“His thinking appears to have evolved,†said David Aufhauser, a former senior Treasury official who co-hosted a fundraiser for Bush earlier this month in Virginia.
Any suggestion of Bush “evolving,” as some right wing sites have suggested, came to an abrupt halt this afternoon, as Fox News host Sean Hannity asked the former Florida governor if he’s changing his views – and got a direct answer.
“No. I believe in traditional marriage,” Bush said.
Period.
