NOM President Traveled To Russia, Slammed America At Anti-Gay Meeting In The Kremlin
Brian Brown last fall went to the Kremlin to praise Russia for its anti-gay “leadership,” and to attack America.
National Organization For Marriage president Brian Brown traveled to Moscow last September to attend an anti-gay conference that had officially been canceled after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forays into the Ukraine became politically distasteful to even his most ardent right wing supporters in America.

Brown, as several outlets reported last year, was in attendance at the event which was organized by the World Congress of Families, an SPLC-certified anti-gay hate group. At that event, the managing director of the WCF told attendees, “Russia is the hope for the world right now.â€
What was not known until now was the full content of the speech Brown delivered, within the walls of the Kremlin.Â
But as Right Wing Watch reports today, in his attack against America and the West Brown held little back at the meeting which was “funded by a handful of close allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.” In fact, Putin was on hand for at least a portion of the conference.
Telling the roomful of international anti-gay religious activists they are at the forefront of “a historic moment,” Brown praised “the leadership in defense of the family that we’re seeing in this country.”
That “leadership,” from Vladimir Putin on down, is responsible for a tremendous increase in hate crime violence, including rape and murder, against LGBT people in Russia.

Calling it, of course, “the redefinition of the family,” Brown urged attendees to “stand in a united manner against the attempt to redefine the very nature of what it means to be a human being,” or, as most Americans call it, marriage equality. And he urged them to gain “a boldness, a willingness to speak,” claiming that America’s equality supporters somehow have stifled the free speech of the anti-gay religious right.
“In the West especially there is an attempt to silence those of us who stand for the truth of marriage; there is an attempt to punish donors who’ve donated to protect marriage in states like California throughout the country, to get their names in public, to try and fire people who are standing up for their beliefs, from their jobs, simply because they are standing for the truth of the union of a man and a woman.”
Brown lamented the fact that marriage equality has gained so much ground so quickly.
“The problem is that we are now in a position when judges, unelected judges are coming and simply throwing away the votes of all of these millions of Americans! We have to stand up for civil rights, our civil right to have our vote counted!”
Meanwhile, activists on Twitter responded to today’s developments:
Most see #Russia‘s war on gays as a #HumanRights atrocity; @NOMupdate sees “leadership.” #LGBT http://t.co/KTVq66ouq4 pic.twitter.com/nTMHhH7dnj

@RightWingWatch Yeah? No. Not at all. What Americans reject is @briansbrown‘s vision of gays. Stay in Russia, Bri, your last best hope.
