Defeated On Marriage, Pam Bondi Offers Best Wishes To Same-Sex Couples

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has finally given up, hoping to declare a truce with same-sex couples embattled in a fight for marriage.

Despite all her anti-gay court briefs and attacks on same-sex couples, her last-minute emergency Supreme Court petition to delay the inevitable, Pam Bondi has now thrown in the towel in an apparent concession that same-sex couples will be able to marry in Florida tomorrow.

The 49-year old Republican AG who not long ago claimed that gay people don’t have “stable and enduring family units,” Bondi today literally phoned-in her announcement to Judge Sarah Zabel this morning, saying the State of Florida would not block clerks from issuing marriage licenses.

“The judge has ruled, and we wish these couples the best,” Bondi’s press secretary, Whitney Ray, told The Associated Press in an email.

Bondi has essentially lost every attempt she’s made to thwart the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Meanwhile, same-sex marriage supporters are celebrating.

“Florida is a bellwether state, and I can think of no more encouraging sign as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to decide whether to resolve this issue for the entire country at its next conference on January 9,” Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, told the AP.

Late last month the Tampa Bay Times awarded Bondi the “Loser of 2014” award, noting  that the “relentless defense of Florida’s gay marriage ban have made her a modern-day Anita Bryant.”
