2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney today said he is considering running again for the White House, according to a report.
Mitt Romney, who lost badly to Barack Obama in 2012 and lost the Republican nomination in 2008 to Sen. John McCain, is considering yet another run at the White House.
In a report just published minutes ago by the Wall Street Journal, Romney reportedly told insiders at a meeting of donors in midtown Manhattan that he is indeed considering another run.
Gov. Romney “didn’t give a timetable for making a decision about another White House run, but he cited unrest overseas as one of the reasons he’s considering another campaign. He also mentioned the long-term health of the economy,” the Wall Street Journal reports, adding that he has left “some close confidants with the impression he might consider it, should other Republicans stumble.”
The remarks come at the tail end of the very same week in which former Florida governor Jeb Bush all but announced his candidacy, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee quit his Fox News TV show to consider a run.
“Many major GOP donors have been waiting to see what Mr. Romney will do before committing to other Republicans who are taking more aggressive steps to launch White House candidacies,” the Journal also noted. “At one point during the meeting, one of the attendees asked Mr. Romney if he wanted to be president, a person present said. The 2012 nominee said, yes, of course.”Â
The 67-year old former Massachusetts governor and private equity investment firm founder who reportedly is worth by some accounts between $250 million and nearly $400 million, was derailed in 2012 by his comments attacking the “47 percent” of Americans he claimed were beholden to the federal government, pay no taxes, and will blindly vote for Barack Obama or any Democratic candidate. Romney, ironically, lost to Barack Obama, 51% to 47%.
