Ben Carson: Same-Sex Couples ‘Not That Smart’ – Bakers ‘Might Put Poison’ In Wedding Cakes
Watch as likely GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson jokes about same-sex couples trying to “force” anti-gay bakers to make wedding cakes for them.
Dr. Ben Carson delivered a 20-minute speech Saturday at Congressman Steve King’s Iowa Freedom Summit, an opportunity for all GOP presidential hopefuls to position themselves for the 2016 race. After his remarks, Carson held a short press conference, the bulk of which was devoted to same-sex marriage.
Carson, just off defending himself in a plagiarism scandal, pushed the lie that same-sex couples don’t need or deserve the protections of marriage because they can create legal documents that provide inheritance and medical decision-making rights. Those legal documents don’t hold the same power as marriage and are prohibitively costly for many.
“What I have a problem with is when people try to force people to act against their beliefs because they say, ‘they’re discriminating against me,'” Carson told reporters. “So they can go right down the street and buy a cake, but no, let’s bring a suit against this person because I want them to make my cake even though they don’t believe in it. Which is really not all that smart because they might put poison in that cake,” he added.
The Hill, which first reported on Carson’s comments, noted the remarks were met with “chuckles from some of his staff and dead silence from the journalists in the room.”Â
Carson also lambasted “a few judges” who have struck down unconstitutional bans on same-sex marriage, claiming they have said to anti-gay voters, “You people don’t know what you’re talking about, we’ll change [the law] to whatever we want.”Â
Like Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, and Bobby Jindal have all said in the past few days, Carson said these rulings can be “overturned,” presumably by a constitutional amendment. And he claimed that it is Republicans who are “tolerant,” but “the Left” is “intolerant.”
He also said the fight against same-sex marriage is not “over.”
“I don’t hear any fat ladies singing,” he said.
