Lawmaker Who Wants Women To Get Permission For Abortion Says ‘Militant Feminist Movement’ Opposed
A Missouri lawmaker is defending his bill that would force women to get notarized permission from a man before being allowed to get an abortion.
Rick Brattin last week introduced a bill that would mandate any woman seeking an abortion bring with her a signed and notarized permission slip from the father. He is now actively defending that bill, claiming that the “women’s movement” has gained so much power that it is taking away rights from men.
“It took two to come together and create a child, and right now the way it is the woman gets the full say and the father gets no say, and I think that that needs to change,” Brattin says. “With the women’s movement for equal rights, well it’s swung so far we have now taken away the man’s right and the say in their child’s life.†Â
As The New Civil Rights Movement reported last week, the only exception in Brattin’s bill is for “legitimate rape.”
“Just like any rape, you have to report it, and you have to prove it,” Brattin said to Mother Jones. “So you couldn’t just go and say ‘Oh yeah, I was raped’ and get an abortion. It has to be a legitimate rape.”
Brattin, as KSHB reports, says the “militant feminist movement” is opposed to the legislation, but he is undeterred, offering questionable comments in response.
“Well it’s not a woman’s body with an abortion. It’s a child’s body.†Brattin says. “It’s a child’s life that’s taken. The woman’s life is not altered.â€
A St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial this morning says “it’s as though the state’s very own Todd Akin never happened,” and asks, “When will these guys learn?”
Brattin’s bill may become law. The Missouri state legislature, which has a Republican super-majority, this year overrode Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill that extended the abortion waiting period from 24 hours to 72.Â
