Despite Video Man Who Yelled ‘Faggot’ As He Hit And Threw Gay Man Into Street Remains Unknown

Atlanta police seem unable to solve a case where they have the license plate of a car and surveillance footage of an anti-gay hate crime.

Back in March a same-sex couple was walking down an Atlanta street holding hands. They say they heard a car honking but chose to ignore it, as many in their situation do. But they were unprepared when a man got out of the passenger side, called one of them “faggot,” punched him in the head and pushed him into the street where a car had to swerve to avoid hitting him.

The couple, who wish to remain unnamed, were able to videotape the car and provide the police with the license plate number.

The driver, according to the Georgia Voice, admits he was driving but claims he didn’t know the passenger who hit the man and called him a faggot.

“We were told they talked to the guy and they said he doesn’t know the passenger, and that he picked the guy up on one block and dropped him off on another,” the witness told the Voice. “It’s crazy to me saying, ‘I don’t know the passenger in my car who beat up that guy.’ It’s just crazy, I don’t believe it.”

The Voice has a full description of the alleged assailant.

Police say that they are unable to get the driver’s cell phone records despite there being video surveillance of the anti-gay hate crime. The couple is “disappointed.”

“I was disappointed that the investigation ended with one conversation and that’s the best they can do. I think they can do better than that, and I would encourage them to do better than that,” the witness said. “I’m not laying a lot of blame on the police department but I’m also not giving them any awards.”

Here’s surveillance video obtained by the Georgia Voice. At about the 35 second mark the assault can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the video, proving it took place. It’s unknown why police cannot obtain cell phone information.
