NOM’s Funding Nosedives, Anti-Gay Organization In Red By More Than $2.5 Million

The National Organization for Marriage ended 2013 more than $2.5 million in the red, and saw its funding drop more than 50 percent.

After news reports, including one by The New Civil Rights Movement this morning following a statement from HRC overnght, NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, finally posted their 2013 tax Form 990 online as legally required. Just a few years after seemingly springing up from nowhere in 2007, the anti-gay organization is seeing its finances “crater,” according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

HRC reports, and an initial examination of NOM’s financial forms reveals the National Organization For Marriage ended 2013 with a negative asset balance of more than $2.5 million. NOM’s political arm, the National Organization for Marriage Education Fund, ended the year with assets of $1.5. Those funds are not allowed by law to be mixed, although NOM reportedly took a loan from its Education Fund in the past.

Perhaps worse and a strong harbinger of the anti-gay group’s future, NOM’s revenues from 2012 to 2013 took a nosedive. NOM’s own 990 shows total revenue in 2012 was nearly $11 million, but in 2013 was just over $5.1 million, more than a 50 percent decrease. NOM’s Education Fund saw even worse results. In 2013 it took in $5.1 million and in 2013 just over $1.7 million.

“Just 2 donors accounted for more than half of the organization’s funding – further evidence that everyday Americans have little interest in furthering NOM’s extremist agenda,” HRC reports.

“NOM should start figuring out that people aren’t willing to give their hard-earned money to an extremist agenda that’s going nowhere,” said Fred Sainz, HRC Vice President of Communications.  “If I were Brian Brown, I’d be worried that my two or three mega-donors are soon going to come to terms with the fact that they’d largely be better off flushing money down the toilet.  Americans certainly aren’t buying what NOM is selling, and it’s only a matter of time before the trickle of money keeping the lights on at NOM HQ dries up.”

Curiously, NOM has not issued one of their usual hyperbolic press releases in almost a week. Their blog was last updated on November 13. Brian Brown and NOM co-founder Robert P. George were seen at the Vatican’s anti-gay marriage conference this week.
