If the name Donnie Swaggart doesn’t ring a bell for you, his disgraced father’s name should. Pentecostal pastor Jimmy Swaggart was the subject of several sex scandals in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and was defrocked for a while. His son, Donnie, at one point took over the family business, the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, after his father was reportedly pulled over by police and found to be in the company of a prostitute. “The Lord told me it’s flat none of your business,” the elder Swaggart announced to is congregation.
That was a long time ago. Today Donnie Swaggart, at least one day last month, seemed to be focused more on international relations, like what he believes to be the relationship between gay people and the terrorist group known as ISIS, ISIL, or IS.
Right Wing Watch found a video of Donnie Swaggart speaking last month on one of his ministry’s Internet TV shows, talking about the controversy between Houston Mayor Annise Parker and the religious right.
The City of Houston had subpoenaed emails and sermons related to the passage of HERO, the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, and the religious right went ballistic, falsely claiming their First Amendment rights were being violated.
Swagart announced, as you can see in the video below, that there is no difference between the hearts of gay people and ISIS, they are, he announced, “the same.”
Swaggart then went on to insist that gay people, if given the chance, would love to behead Christians.
“All of this is to shut the Bible up,” Swaggart told his audience. “They want the Bible gone. And I’m going to make a statement: These people that are trying to do this in Houston, the only difference between them and ISIS, those thugs in Iraq, is those here cannot chop our heads off. That’s the only difference. The heart is the same. The heart is the same. If they could silence us that way to intimidate others, that’s exactly what they would do.”
