Brian Brown, president of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, issued a statement on today’s Supreme Court announcement. Guess what it said?
Every year the death knell for the National Organization For Marriage sounds louder and louder. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it was refusing to hear any current same-sex marriage case that appellate courts had already ruled on. All those cases, seven from five states, had been decided in favor of same-sex marriage.
In fact, to date, since the Supreme Court’s DOMA ruling last year, there have been 40 rulings in favor of marriage equality in federal courts.Â
That fact alone might make one think Brian Brown and his few co-workers at the National Organization For Marriage (NOM) might be posing their resumes at LinkedIn and Monster.com.Â

But perhaps in an effort to keep up appearances, or perhaps because Brown has already begun exporting his special brand of hate to other countries, like Russia, and to the African Continent, Brown is in it for the long haul. Who could blame him? The money is great, and every loss the anti-gay groups get is another opportunity to play the victim and to beg for more money.
Take, for example, Brown’s statement about today’s Supreme Court’s decision.
He actually has the unmitigated gall to call the nation’s highest justices “unelected judges” and today’s announcement an “illegitimate act.”
“Marriage is the union of one man and one woman,” Brown says. Clearly not a history scholar, he falsely adds, “it has been this throughout the history of civilization and will remain this no matter what unelected judges say.”
“Unelected judges.” There are probably few if any “jobs” that require greater scrutiny of one’s entire life than being a U.S Supreme Court justice.
“NOM will continue to devote all our energy and resources to stand for the truth of marriage, and to advocate the importance of preserving it,” Brown’s statement insists.
Claiming NOM is “surprised and extremely disappointed,” Brown calls the Supreme Court’s decision “wrong on so many levels.”Â
Of course, technically it’s right on every level, including that the Supreme Court rarely steps in if there have not been different rulings at the appellate court level.
Brown also, wrongly, claims, “it’s mind-boggling that lower court judges would be allowed to impose the redefinition of marriage in these states, and our highest court would have nothing to say about it.” In fact, by allowing the appellate court rulings to stand, the Supreme Court has said a great deal.
Calling the state of marriage “critical,” Brown says, “We therefore call on the US Congress to move forward immediately to send a federal marriage amendment to the states for ratification.”
Something that will never, ever happen, especially since more than half the country supports the right of same-sex couples to marry.
“We call upon Americans vigorously to contest this development by turning to the political process, starting with the upcoming mid-term elections. We urge voters to hold politicians accountable and demand to know if they will accept the illegitimate act of attempting to redefine marriage or whether they will stand with the American people to resist,” Brown cries. And, pushing the envelope on his organization’s tax-exempt status, Brown adds, “In particular, we urge Republicans to hold their party leaders to account, and to demand that they remain true to their belief that marriage is the union of one man and one woman which was a pillar of the party’s founding in 1856, and remains essential to society’s well-being today.”
That sound you just heard? Yes, the hastening death knell of NOM.
