Whoopi To Christians: Gay Marriage ‘Is Coming Whether You’re Comfortable With It Or Not’

Whoopi Goldberg called the Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage “spectacular,” and let conservative Christians know that marriage equality is coming — whether they’re “comfortable with it or not.”

On this morning’s “The View,” co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace talked about yesterday’s  Supreme Court announcement on same-sex marriage. All four were positive and supportive, though Republican strategist and former Bush 43 spokesperson Nicolle Wallace tried to whitewash over the GOP’s increased attacks on the LGBT community by claiming Republicans support same-sex marriage.

But it was Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell who reveled in the news, with Whoopi saying, “You cannot stem this tide. It is coming whether you’re comfortable with it or not. For all of you folks who are deep Christians, as I recall as a child, I remember Jesus had a lot of different kinds of friends. Jesus never turned anybody away.”

Meanwhile, Rosie Perez took a shot at the GOP.

“What was amazing was how quiet the Republicans were,” Perez said, pointedly with Wallace in her sights. “They came out very hard against this and yesterday, you just only heard one little peep.”

“Republicans aren’t the only ones evolving on this issue,” Wallace pushed back. “When President Obama of course was first elected, he wasn’t where he is now. He wasn’t an advocate for marriage equality.”

That’s a typical GOP talking point that ignores the fact the President Obama publicly came out against Prop 8 and DOMA before he was elected in 2008.

Fortunately, Wallace added, “In 10 years, you will not even be able to find two people to debate it — in three years… The younger generation will save us from the hardened debates that we’ve seen in our lives.”
