GOP Candidate Pushing Second Amendment: Gay Marriage Will ‘Deceive Our Citizens Into Hell’
The Republican candidate for a State House District in Colorado is warning citizens about same-sex marriage. He also happens to be pushing Second Amendment protections while attacking marriage equality.
Gordon Klingenschmitt is well-known in some circles on the radical religious right, and his name is now gaining wider recognition. A former Navy chaplain, he was drummed out of the armed forces after refusing to not appear at political events in uniform — events including his Pray In Jesus Name ministry.
Now, Klingenschmitt, who goes by the nickname “Dr. Chaps,” is running to be the next State House Representative in Colorado for District 15. He actually won the primary with 71 percent of the vote, and in a few short weeks will face his Democratic challenger.
Klingenschmitt’s latest assaut on the senses and the LGBT community came just yesterday.
“Gay marriage is still illegal in all fifty states because God has decreed it so,” Dr. Chaps said on his Internet prayer show. That of course should be a concern to anyone in Colorado, since clearly the laws of man are not sufficiently recognized by Klingenschmitt.
To prove that point, he says, “our laws will reflect God’s highest law so that our government locally does not deceive our citizens into Hell by telling the citizens this is okay, this is normal, this is acceptable when God, you yourself, have decreed it to be sin.”
As you watch the short video clip, thanks to Right Wing Watch, note the chyron at the bottom, which as Klingenschmitt attacks same-sex marriage, reads at one point, “Take Action: Defend 2nd Amendment.”
And in fact, the Second Amendment is a core issue for Dr. Chaps. His campaign website reads:
PRO-2ND AMENDMENT: The only candidate with military experience, Gordon also earned his NRA badge at age 16 as captain of his high-school rifle team. He worked in the recall elections that fired two Senate Democrats. As Member of the NRA, PPFC, and RMGO, he will not compromise.
The message he is sending — telling voters that gays are going to Hell and taking others with them, and flashing a Second Amendment message while he’s talking about same-sex marriage is frightening. Intentional or not, it’s disturbing, to say the least.
