Conservatives Are Fundraising Off Your Ebola Fear – And It’s Disgusting

If you ever wonder why Fox News and conservative media report ad nauseum on false scandals and ramp up crazy apocalyptic fears, it’s because there’s money in it. Conservative PACs are doing it too — and they’re making a fortune off fear.

“As a doctor I know what a terrible and deadly disease ebola [sic] is, and I know that if we do not STOP EBOLA TODAY, we will be in a much worse situation very soon,” reads the fundraising email signed by Congressman Paul Broun.

Broun is a medical doctor, and one might think that affords him a modicum of respect when it comes to matters of science — thus giving him credibility to talk about Ebola. Who better to give your hard-earned, hard-saved money to than a group endorsed by a medical doctor, right?

Wrong.

At least in this case.

Dr. Paul Broun is also the man who infamously said, “All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell.”

Why?

Jesus.

Congressman Broun is telling Americans who have the unfortunate luck to find themselves on the receiving end of an email sent out by the Conservative Action Fund, that if they send money he will “ensure” their safety.

“I’ve joined with the Conservative Action Fund and started the Stop Ebola Petition to ensure the safety of Americans and demand Congress end all commercial flights from ebola [sic] stricken nations,” Broun writes in the fundraising email. “Ebola travels fast — this petition has to travel faster.”

Politico reports that the “email, marked by two black blocks with bright red lettering, is titled ‘Stop Ebola from reaching you.’ Its appeal continues, ‘If you can … please chip in $5 or $10 to the Conservative Action Fund to help us distribute this petition to literally millions of American citizens.'”

Disgusting.

The email links to a petition that looks like this:

Most petitions these days sent out by large organizations are little more than fundraising vehicles and email address capture tools. Rarely do they actually accomplish what they advocate for or promise, although they are good tools to raise awareness, when used properly.

No petition will “Stop Ebola from reaching you.”

No petition — or donation to Congressman Broun or his friends at the Conservative Action Fund — will end all commercial flights from Ebola stricken nations.

Nor, should we — but that’s another story.
