Breaking – Exclusive: Nevada County Clerk: Same-Sex Marriage Licenses Could Be Issued Today

The Nevada County Clerk’s office told The New Civil Rights Movement exclusively that the issues surrounding issuance of licenses “might be resolved today,” allowing them to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The Clark County Clerk’s Office, which includes Las Vegas, Nevada, tells The New Civil Rights Movement in an email conversation that there have “been some major developments this morning,” and “it looks like this might be resolved today.”

Those “major developments” likely include the withdrawal of an emergency stay request initiated by the anti-gay Coalition for the Protection of Marriage.

The County Clerk’s Office adds, that “[l]ate Wednesday, the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage filed for a stay in the Nevada case and asked that the court’s mandate finalizing its ruling to allow gay marriage be rescinded.  In response to that request, the 9th Circuit asked all parties in the Nevada case, including state officials, to respond to the coalition’s motion by 5pm today.”

And just an hour ago, the Reno Gazette Journal reported that the “9th Circuit Court of Appeals has given the green light to Judge James C. Mahan to issue an injunction to end Nevada’s ban on gay marriage.”

That injunction is expected to be issued this afternoon.

County clerks in Washoe and Clark counties are prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples once that injunction is signed.

Via Twitter, the Clark County Clerk’s Office announced it will begin issuing licenses to same-sex couples one hour after the district court issues the injunction.

And in a press release sent to The New Civil Rights Movement, the Clark County Clerk’s Office added:

Marriage licenses will be issued to same-sex couples after the Federal District Court issues an injunction of the Nevada State Constitutional amendment that prohibits gay marriage. For logistical reasons, the Marriage License Bureau will begin issuing the licenses about an hour after the injunction is filed. At this time we do not know when that will happen, but we will let you know as soon as more information becomes available.

All of which means that marriage licenses could be issued today, or early tomorrow.

Finally, of note is this tweet, retweeted by the Clark County Clerk’s Office:
