Anti-Gay Groups Turn Spirit Day Into ‘Bring Your Bible To School Day’

Yesterday, while millions of people around the world supported the LGBT community and took a stand against bullying for Spirit Day, anti-gay groups turned the day into “Bring Your Bible To School Day.”

Since 2010, October 16 has been Spirit Day, the day that people, organizations, and companies around the world support the LGBT community and take a stand against bullying. But for two anti-gay groups, October 16 became “Bring Your Bible To School Day.”

Focus on the Family, the anti-gay organization created by the founder of the Family Research Council, and the Alliance Defending Freedom, a legal firm created by some of the most anti-gay leaders among the religious right, promoted the event.

But while there were what seemed like millions of tweets celebrating Spirit Day, highly-organized and promoted by GLAAD, there were few if any showing participation in Bring Your Bible To School Day.

Students and teachers have the legal right to bring bibles into school, and schools cannot “discriminate against student prayer or religious speech.”

The Huffington Post reports Focus on the Family cams it created the event to encourage students to exert their First Amendment rights.

“It’s a religious freedom event for students in public schools going up all the way to the college level,” Candi Cushman, education analyst for Focus on the Family and facilitator of the event, told HuffPost. “They voluntarily bring their Bibles to school as a visual celebration of their religious freedom and start conversations with other students.”

Focus on the Family doesn’t mention the fact that their event is on the same day as Spirit Day.
