Anti-Gay Christian Baker Says She Is ‘Compassionate’
The anti-gay Christian baker who broke into tears this weekend now claims she is “compassionate,” despite claims she called a lesbian couple “abominations unto the Lord.”
Melissa Klein is the owner, along with her husband, of Sweet Cakes By Melissa, the Christian bakery that since 2011 has been involved in an anti-gay discrimination case. Speaking at the conservative Values Voter Summit, Klein made headlines this weekend when she broke down in tears at a panel on marriage held by the uber-right wing anti-gay hate group Family Research Council.
The Kleins refuse to bake wedding cakes for same-sex couples. They’ve lost their case in Oregon, where the state says they’ve violated an anti-discrimination law — one they’re required to follow since they’re licensed by the state to do business.Â

Now they operate out of their home with no physical storefront, just a website.Â
Melissa Klein took a moment on Monday to share her thoughts on Facebook.
“Our culture has accepted 2 huge lies,” Klein wrote, attributing the quote to Pastor Rick Warren. “The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. Second is that to love someone means that you must agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.”
Compassionate?
According to a document filed by a lesbian couple in 2013, when they went into the Klein’s bakery to order their wedding cake, Melissa said they were were “abominations unto the lord” and refused to bake them a cake. Klein denies the claim.
Not sure how that fits into the “compassionate” narrative.
Not sure how this does, either.
Also on Facebook, Klein earlier this year posted a photo of a cake she baked for an ex-gay group, the Restored Hope Network. Ex-gay “therapy” has been deemed harmful by nearly every major medical organization in the U.S. and many around the world.
