Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is threatening the GOP to become more anti-gay than it is now, or else he says he’ll leave the party and take evangelicals with him.
Mike Huckabee is mad as hell and he’s not going to take the Republican Party’s “abdication” on same-sex marriage anymore. The former governor of Arkansas, former Republican presidential candidate, current host of Fox News’ “Huckabee,” and author of a dozen books — including the upcoming, God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy — has spent the week attacking his fellow Republicans for being soft on same-sex marriage.
“I am utterly exasperated with Republicans and the so-called leadership of the Republicans who have abdicated on this issue when, if they continue this direction they guarantee they’re gonna lose every election in the future,†Huckabee told his friends at the anti-gay hate group, American Family Association.Â
Huckabee, who is just 59-years old, is also an ordained Southern Baptist Minister and was the Chairman of the National Governors Association from 2005-2006.
This week he also spread his personal opinion, which is far from fact, about how government works in America. Railing against the Supreme Court’s decision to not take up any same-sex marriage cases, which paved the way for an additional 11 states to extend marriage to same-sex couples, Huckabee wrongly claimed that the Supreme Court merely issues non-binding opinions. He added, if “the other two branches of government choose not to agree that they have correctly interpreted the Constitution… then it’s not law yet.”
That’s when he should have heard a buzzer sounding, but he did not.
Back at the American Family Association, home to one of America’s most anti-gay activists, Bryan Fischer, Huckabee unleashed his threat.
“If the Republicans wanna lose guys like me, and a whole bunch of still God-fearing Bible-believing people, go ahead and just abdicate on this issue, and go ahead and say abortion doesn’t matter, either. Because at that point, you lose me, I’m gone. I’ll become an independent, I’ll start finding people that have guts to stand, I’m tired of this.”
Of course, were Huckabee to become an independent, and take the radical religious evangelical right with him, and set up shop as an independent, and run for president, it would split the GOP in two, and hand the Democrat a all-but automatic win.
So, Pastor Huckabee, if you insist…
