‘Adolph Hitler All Over Again’: NC GOP Leaders Compare Town Flying Gay Flag To Naziism

On Friday, after same-sex marriage became legal in North Carolina, local Republican politicians posted the above image to Facebook and compared flying the gay flag to Naziism.

On Friday, the City Council of Asheville voted unanimously to fly the gay flag over city hall to celebrate marriage equality coming to  North Carolina.

In response, two local Republican leaders posted an image of the gay flag flying on city hall and merged it with a poorly photoshopped image of the Nazi flag on city hall.

Former city councilman Carl Mumpower and former Buncombe County GOP chairman Chad Nesbitt are comparing the city council’s decision to fly the gay flag to something the Nazis would have done.

“I am equating their methods with the Nazi movement,” Mumpower said, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. “They are indifferent to the rule of law and indifferent to the vote of the people. And that’s Adolph [sic] Hitler all over again in a different disguise.”

Mumpower and Nesbitt claim the city council violated an open-meetings rule by making the decision to fly the flag, and called it “fascism” in a statement.

“That’s a form or government characterized by ‘oppressive, dictatorial control’ – as Christians, we feel that our values are being ignored and oppressed by a dictatorial minority.”

“The gentleman who once ran Germany and much of the rest of the world into the ground and challenged our ‘Greatest Generation’ would recognize and applaud this model coming out of the ‘Me Generation’ – we shouldn’t.”

On Friday, two dozen people led by the Republican anti-gay pair held up a Christian flag outside city hall in protest.
