Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan Officiates At Her First Same-Sex Wedding

Justice Elena Kagan, for the first time, officiated at the wedding on a same-sex couple.

Elena Kagan joined the ranks of her fellow present and former female Supreme Court Justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O’Connor, this weekend by marrying a same-sex couple, her first. The 54-year old former Harvard Law School Dean officiated at the wedding of Mitchell Reich, 27, and Patrick William Pearsall, 34.

Reich is a lawyer in the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department, “providing legal advice to the president, the attorney general and federal agencies,” the New York Times wedding announcement says.

He graduated magna cum laude from Yale and received a law degree, also magna cum laude, from Harvard, where he was the president of the Law Review. Until August, he was a law clerk for Justice Kagan. After the wedding, Mr. Reich will take Mr. Pearsall’s surname as his own middle name.

Mr. Pearsall, 34, is a lawyer in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the State Department in Washington, working on international investments and cross-border infrastructure projects, and he also negotiates marine-life treaties. He graduated magna cum laude and received a law degree from Columbia.

The Chevy Chase, Maryland wedding took place Sunday.

Next Tuesday, September 29, the Supreme Court will hold a closed meeting to debate which cases to hear this fall. Among them reportedly will be several same-sex marriage cases. Last week, Justice Ginsburg made news stating there is no need to “rush” to take up a case, until there is a disagreement at the appellate court level.
