Federal Appeals Court Stays Ruling Striking Down Ban On Same-Sex Marriages For Two States

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals this morning placed a stay on its own ruling that struck down bans on same-sex marriage in two states.

Despite winning in federal court, and again earlier this month in federal appeals court, same-sex couples in Indiana and Wisconsin will have to wait even longer to marry.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals on September 4 had upheld rulings by federal judges that found marriage bans in those two states to be unconstitutional.

This morning, the 7th Circuit Court, as expected, place a stay on its own ruling, and will wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide if it will rule on the issue.

“If the high court denies the appeal, the stay will be automatically lifted,” The Hill reports.

The nation’s highest court is meeting in two weeks from today to examine cases from five states, and may decide to hear one or more of them — or may pass on all for now.
