Embattled Anti-Gay Archbishop Forces Music Director To Resign For Marrying A Man

Archbishop John Nienstedt, accused of inappropriate sexual relations with men, has forced a gay music director to resign after he married another man.

The embattled Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis, John Nienstedt, forced the music director of a small Minnesota church to resign, after learning the man planned to marry a man. Nienstedt is fending off calls for him to resign over his handling of child sex abuse cases, for protecting and even paying off priests who committed the child rapes, and more recently, for claims he had sex with other men.

“Our beloved Director of Music, Jamie Moore, married his long-time partner Garrett this past weekend,” a letter conspicuously linked to on the front page of the parish’s website reads. “Since Jamie’s marriage conflicts with official Church teaching, Archbishop Nienstedt asked for Jamie’s resignation. Jamie has indicated that he intends to go along with the Archbishop’s request. Jamie will be sorely missed, and we wish him every happiness.”

Minnesota Public Radio News reports that “Nienstedt said he was ‘consulted about the employment matter and I responded by saying the teachings of the Church must be upheld, including the pastoral response of working with an employee whose actions are contrary to the Catholic faith.'”

MPR News reported last year that Nienstedt had approved secret payments to priests who had admitted to sexually assaulting children, kept priests in ministry despite allegations of child sex abuse and failed to warn parishioners about the Rev. Curtis Wehmeyer’s sexual interest in younger men. Wehmeyer is now in prison for sexually assaulting two sons of a parish employee and possessing child pornography.

In July, after allegations of Nienstedt having long-term sexual relations with adult men came to light, the Archdiocese hired a local Minnesota law firm to investigate. Their investigation was complete at the end of July, yet the results have not been made public. 

Nienstedt, infamously known for spamming hundreds of thousands of Minnesota homes with DVDs attacking same-sex marriage,  has claimed Satan is the “source” of same-sex marriage.
