Ryan Murphy Asks Young People To ‘Become Larry Kramers’ As He Accepts Emmy For ‘The Normal Heart’

“The Normal Heart” last night won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie. Watch as director Ryan Murphy asks young people to become activists like Larry Kramer. 

“We’re only here because of one person, and that’s Mr. Larry Kramer,” director Ryan Murphy announced last night, accepting the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie, in front of a standing ovation. “We did this for him.” 

Kramer is the iconic HIV/AIDS activist who wrote “The Normal Heart,” first as a 1985 Off-Broadway play. On stage last night he wore a cap emblazoned with an emblem for Act Up, the activist organization he founded. Kramer is also the co-founder of GMHC.

Murphy said the group wanted to “ask young people watching to become Larry Kramers, to find a cause you believe in, that you will fight for, that you will die for.”

He directed supporters to AMFAR and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
