The Tea Party Republican nominee for a Colorado state House seat is now under fire after sending supporters a letter claiming a gay Democratic U.S. Congressman will “join ISIS in beheading Christians, but not just in Syria, right here in America.”
Former Navy Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt who reportedly was involuntarily discharged is running for the Colorado state House. Despite his extremist, anti-gay, anti-women, and radical religious views, Republicans have nominated him as their candidate.
Now, Klingenschmitt’s Democratic opponent is calling for him to withdraw from the race, after making a shocking accusation about gay U.S. Congressman Jared Polis in a newsletter he sent to supporters.
“Democrats like Polis want to bankrupt Christians who refuse to worship and endorse his sodomy. Next he’ll join ISIS in beheading Christians, but not just in Syria, right here in America.”
Klingenschmitt isn’t backing down, claiming “some Democrats do not have a sense of humor†and don’t understand “hyperbole.”Â
The accusation was spurred by a revamped ENDA bill Polis is working on that removes religious exemptions. ENDA — which would protect workers from firing for being or being perceived as LGBT and is still not law — recently was denounced by a large number of LGBT organizations in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision.
Lois Fornander, the Democratic state House candidate and Klingenschmitt’s opponent has called the “beheading” comment “inflammatory, irresponsible and repulsive.”
