Watch: This Same-Sex Marriage Ad Featuring A Couple Together 50 Years Airs Today In Ohio

Starting today, Why Marriage Matters Ohio is airing this beautiful ad promoting same-sex marriage in the Buckeye State.

A coalition of marriage equality and LGBT civil rights groups today is launching this TV ad campaign to secure same-sex marriage in Ohio. Why Marriage Matters Ohio, a project of the Equality Ohio Education Fund, Freedom to Marry, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the ACLU Foundation of Ohio, says their “campaign is about having conversations and sharing stories, showing that same-sex couples and their families should be welcomed and treated fairly in Ohio. It is about opening hearts and minds throughout our state.”

Cleveland.com notes the video features former Cleveland Museum of Art curator Henry Hawley and Cleveland Institute of Music instructor George Vassos, together 50 years. The couple writes,

After half a century together, we couldn’t imagine our lives without each other. So on our 50th anniversary, we decided that it was the time to make it official and get married.

We traveled to New York City, and on October 25th, we finally said those two magical words—”I do.” It was a very special moment for both of us, but the moment we crossed state lines to return to Ohio—those words and the commitment we made to each other were no longer recognized in the state we call home.

We believe that love is love. Everyone who wants to get married should have the freedom to marry the person they love.

After fifty years, we’ve watched as our country has changed, and we feel truly blessed that we have seen the tide turn towards freedom and equality for all loving couples. Our only wish is that some day soon, our marriage will be recognized in the state we call home, too.

Since the Supreme Court struck down the core of the Defense of Marriage Act last year, we’ve seen state after state has secured the freedom to marry. With your help, Ohio will be next.
