Wanted: News Writers

Award-winning progressive news and opinion site announces call for socially conscious news writers.

The New Civil Rights Movement, an award-winning news and opinion site focused on progressive politics and civil rights, is looking for freelance writers to join our esteemed and accomplished team. Now in our sixth year, we’re proud to be one of the fastest-growing news sites of our kind, regularly reaching one million intelligent, influential, and politically-active readers monthly, and up to four million readers weekly via Facebook.

Are you a news junkie? Do you often find stories today that everyone else is reading tomorrow? Are you passionate about civil rights and same-sex marriage and voting rights and women’s rights and immigration and politics and climate change and race relations and income inequality and gun control and progressive politics across local, state, and national levels? Are you a good writer who has experience working in online news media? Can you write at least four strong, well-sourced, interesting, informative, and highly-readable articles a week, covering news about civil rights, politics, or culture, either here in the U.S. or around the world?

If so, we want to talk with you!

Send us your resume, links to the best three stories you’ve written, and a short (300 words or less) essay explaining why you would be a good fit at The New Civil Rights Movement.

We’re especially looking for news writers who can do quick turn-around on important, fast-paced, and breaking stories. A NCRM news writer generally takes assignments from the NCRM editor, although they are welcome to pitch stories as well.

The New Civil Rights Movement is a three-time GLAAD Media Award nominee and the 2014 winner for Outstanding Blog. We are regularly quoted by and linked to in the mainstream media, and we’re a highly-respected voice in progressive politics and the LGBT news media.

We’re also very excited about the new launch of our totally redesigned website that will allow us to communicate more intimately and seamlessly, empower and motivate more quickly, and engage more actively with our readers. We’ll also be able to organize and unite around our mission of securing and expanding civil rights for more minority and under-served communities.

The New Civil Rights Movement is proud of our long history of delivering accurate and important news stories at breaking-news speed, and our strong history of analysis and providing context for critical issues in a timely manner.

This is not a call for op-ed or opinion writers. This is a call for writers who can source and turn around breaking news and news of-the-day before it hits the mainstream news outlets.

Be sure to include your resume, links to three articles you’ve written, a link to your main online presence — such as your personal/professional website — and to your Twitter, Facebook, and other social media pages, and your short essay.

We’ll do our best to respond, but please understand we’re a small group and we cannot promise we’ll be able to get back to everyone.
