Embattled AG Pam Bondi Immediately Files Appeal Of Ruling Overturning Florida Marriage Ban

The ink wasn’t even dry on a state judge’s ruling that found Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional when embattled and controversial Attorney General Pamela Bondi filed her notice of appeal.

Pam Bondi wasted no time in filing her appeal of a county judge’s ruling that today found Florida’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

Bondi came into the national spotlight in May and June when her filed defense of the Sunshine State’s marriage ban included highly-offensive and grossly false claims about gay people.

In a marriage case unrelated to today’s decision, Bondi had claimed that forcing Florida to recognize out-of-state legal civil same-sex marriages would “impose significant public harm” and play havoc with existing marriage laws in the Sunshine State.

She also claimed, falsely, that same-sex couples don’t create stable or enduring homes.

“Florida’s marriage laws,” Bondi had written in the court filing (PDF), “have a close, direct, and rational relationship to society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units.”

Attacks on Bondi for her anti-gay claims rattled the controversial AG so much she released a press release defending her characterizations of gay people and insisted that they were not necessarily her personal opinions, and she was merely executing her job function as required by law.

Of course, that’s wholly false — as U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder had clearly stated earlier this year, that no state AG should feel compelled to defend bans on same-sex marriage, as they are all likely unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, it’s clear those likely are Bondi’s personal opinions, given all the top-level members of the Republican Party she has taken the time to rub elbows with, including Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman and anti-gay activist Ralph Reed:
