Tony Perkins Latest Religious Right Activist To Compare Cake Baking To Hitler’s Germany

How many more anti-gay religious right activists and pundits are going to compare a ruling by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission to Hitler’s Germany? In December a same-sex couple that had sued Jack Phillips over his refusal to bake them a wedding cake won their case.

Phillips is the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, and  last week he lost his appeal. Being a licensed business in the state of Colorado, Phillips is required, just like everyone else in the the Rocky Mountain State, to follow the laws of the land — including its non-discrimination ordinance which bans anti-LGBT  discrimination.

The latest religious right activist is Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, who yesterday told Phillips attorney, Nicolle Martin of Alliance Defending Freedom, that he is “beginning to think, are re-education camps next? When are they going to start rolling out the boxcars to start hauling off Christians?”

“At what point do Christians say, ‘Enough is enough!’?,” Perkins queried.

Of course, while Hitler certainly killed millions of Christians, the “boxcars” were essentially used to take Jewish people to the concentration camps, where millions upon millions were ultimately gassed to death, or murdered in some other way — including via starvation.

Another group Hitler targeted, of course, was gay people — the same group of people Perkins claims is acting like Hitler now, persecuting Christians.

Martin of course was only to happy to complete the analogy for Perkins. “I guarantee that we are going to continue to see the witch hunt,” she said.

Of course the sheer math of this makes Perkins claims ludicrous. The LGBT community is likely about five or ten percent of the population — that includes openly LGBT and closeted. Christians — a group which includes LGBT people, by the way — make up 76 percent of the population in America. It’s unclear how Perkins thinks gay people can persecute Christians, when we can be fired just for being LGBT, when most of us can’t marry yet, and when there is still a huge stigma in many parts of the country for being LGBT.

Listen:

Earlier this week, American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer, in “THE GAY GESTAPO BRINGS BACK SLAVERY,” claimed, “someone forgot to tell the Stormtroopers in the homosexual movement about the civil war, the civil rights movement, and freedom of both will and conscience.”
