UPDATE: The vote appears to be delayed – we’ll post more information as soon as it’s available.

UPDATE II: Debate has begun at about 5:40 PM.

This afternoon the full Indiana House is scheduled to vote on a bill that would put before the voters in November a ballot measure asking them if they want to change the constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Currently, Indiana law bans same-sex marriage, but conservative extremists are hoping to defy federal precedent and write discrimination into their constitution.

Federal judges around the country are increasingly finding state bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, most recently in Oklahoma and Utah.

One Indiana House committee delayed voting on the measure earlier this month, so Indiana Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma moved the bill to another committee, which approved the measure, allowing today’s vote.

In response, an Indiana Republican left the party.

The controversial legislation would also deny the right of lawmakers in the future to allow civil unions or domestic partnerships, a step many find too extreme.

You can watch the vote live, on the Indiana House website, starting at 1:30 PM ET.

Stay tuned to The New Civil Rights Movement for results of the vote.
