John Kerry says that he’s sure the U.S. Supreme Court would rule Arizona‘s anti-gay “religious freedom” bill unconstitutional.

In an exclusive interview today with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, the U.S. Secretary of State said he couldn’t imagine SB-1062 withstanding scrutiny from the high court.

“I cannot imagine how that law would withstand the scrutiny of the Supreme Court of the United States,” Secretary Kerry said, adding that he hope GOP Governor Jan Brewer vetoes the legislation.

“I would hope that she would make the right decision,” Kerry told Mitchell. “Let’s see whether the governor vetoes it,” he said. ‘I am counting on the governor.”

Kerry also noted that the road to equality for LGBT people “has not been an easy path,” and “everyone know this.”

“But what’s important is that we’re on the path, we’re staying steady, we made enormous progress in the Untied States, and we will stand up for peoples’ rights, anywhere in the world, because that’s who we are in the United States of America.”

Kerry also labeled Uganda’s life-in-prison anti-gay law “disgraceful” and “contrary to fundamental basic human rights.”

He called the fight for LGBT civil rights “a fight worth fighting.”

Over 80 major national corporations have condemned the bill, and several Republicans — including those who voted for the bill — have as well.

Gov. Brewer today is reportedly meeting with the bill’s supporters and opponents and is expected to sign or veto the bill soon. She has until Saturday.
