Watch: A ‘Very Proud’ Elton John Says It Is His Duty To Get Married (Video)

Elton John says his fellow countrymen should “celebrate” England’s new same-sex marriage law, but he adds, solemnly, it’s also his “duty” to marry. The famous singer-songwriter told NBC’s Matt Lauer that he is “very proud” of his country.

“I’m very proud of Britain, and the laws we’ve seen come into existence,” John told Lauer, inside his new Las Vegas nightclub, standing next to his fiancé and long-term partner, photographer David Furnish.

“So, for this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t say, ‘Oh well, we have a civil partnership, we’re not going to bother to get married.’ We will get married.”

Lauer asked John, “Do you think it’s almost a duty to get married?” Before he could finish his sentence, both John and Furnish interrupted. “Yes, of course,” the couple responded. “Because it’s taken so long for it to come into existence. We should be grateful.”

The couple announced this week they will marry in England next month.
