Uganda: Gays Arrested For Having Sex, Evicted From Their Homes For Being Gay

Several gay citizens in Uganda have reportedly been evicted from their homes, while others have been arrested for having sex, according to several disturbing reports that have surfaced over the past week. Last month, Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, amid international outcry, signed into law the Anti-Homosexuality Bill (AHB) that mandates life in prison for “aggravated homosexuality” and extensive jail time for simple acts of consensual sexual contact with a person of the same-gender.

Sebaspace, a website or blog that’s been regularly published since at least September 2008, reports of two evictions, including the images above.

The letter on the left, according to Sebaspace, is dated March 3 and reads:

You have been a wonderful woman as well as a tenant who hasn’t given me any trouble over rent whatsoever. But due to what is going on in the country [regarding the anti-gay law] and your way you and your friends behave, I am sorry but I think you are a depraved person who I can no longer tolerate in my house. I also cannot fight against the government. For that reason, I want you out of my house by March 30, 2014, peacefully.

The letter on the right reads:

I am writing to inform you that you have been evicted from the house you live in because of the stories [about your gay lifestyle] that appeared on Bukedde Television and in the print media. We can no longer live with someone like you. Therefore, vacate the premises before the 5th of May 2014

LGBT activists Scott Long and Kasha Jacqueline have both posted the stories to Twitter:

Meanwhile, reports are also coming that police have arrested at least one same-sex couple, breaking into their hotel room and handcuffing them for the “crime” of having sex with a person of the same gender.

In “2 Gay Men Caught Having SEX In A Hotel Room,” the Nigerian website Ynaija.com (Google cache here) reports that “two Ugandan gay men were caught in a hotel by a lodging attendant having sex.”

According to reports, sexual moans were heard about 20 minutes after the men had checked into the room they had booked at the hotel. The police were alerted by the lodging attendant who heard the men from a distance.

They were busted shortly after police arrived at the scene.
