The New Civil Rights Movement Wins ‘Outstanding Blog’ at GLAAD Media Awards

The New Civil Rights Movement on Saturday won the “Outstanding Blog” award at the GLAAD Media Awards, held in New York City’s Waldorf Astoria hotel. The GLAAD Media Awards “recognize and honor media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community that inspire change,” according to GLAAD.

“We are extremely humbled to be honored by GLAAD with the award for ‘Outstanding Blog’ this year,” says David Badash, Founder and Managing Editor of The New Civil Rights Movement. “GLAAD is one of the nation’s most important and effective LGBT civil rights organizations.”

“The New Civil Rights Movement has worked hard for more than five years to help advance the civil rights of the LGBT community. As an influential and independent publisher, to have our work recognized as ‘outstanding’ by the good people at GLAAD is exceptionally rewarding to us,” Badash says.

Badash sees publishing as a “sacred trust” that must be earned. “Millions of people turn to us for our credible reporting, analysis, and opinion. We will continue to hold ourselves to the highest standards to help inform, educate, and rally the LGBT and progressive communities in our march toward advancing equality every day.”

Badash began The New Civil Rights Movement just days after Prop 8 was passed by California voters in 2008, out of frustration with what he saw as a lack of understanding about why people opposed marriage equality. The New Civil Rights Movement quickly grew into a highly cited media organization delivering news and opinion on politics and issues that affect LGBT people and the progressive community. The New Civil Rights Movement continues to be one of the fastest-growing news and opinion sites of its kind in the nation, frequently attracting nearly one million regular monthly visitors, often through its highly-trafficked Facebook and Twitter social media accounts. The New Civil Rights Movement has almost 140,000 Facebook fans and over 60,000 followers on Twitter.

The New Civil Rights Movement was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in 2012, 2013, and 2014, before winning this weekend.

Home to almost two dozen authors and editors reporting from across the U.S. and from around the world, The New Civil Rights Movement’s masthead includes award-winning writers, attorneys, university professors, and leaders of LGBT and civil rights organizations. It is a well-read and well-respected voice on politics and civil rights, offering breaking news often well before the mainstream press, along with unique insight and analysis of stories across a variety of topics.

The New Civil Rights Movement next month will launch a completely redesigned news site — including the new logo above — built on a new platform that will enable it to interact more intimately with its readers, offer more services — including helping people register to vote — send petitions to the nation’s political, social, and business leaders, and organize and unite more minority and under-served communities around securing and expanding civil rights for all.

“Your rights, your movement” will be its new rallying slogan.

The New Civil Rights Movement today is also announcing it is beginning a search for additional experienced freelance writers to expand its coverage of political and civil rights news at the state, national, and international levels, to continue its strong tradition of journalistic excellence.

For example, in 2013, The New Civil Rights Movement offered unprecedented coverage of the Supreme Court’s DOMA and Prop 8 decisions. It published opinions and reports from legal LGBT notables from Georgetown University, Columbia Law School, the Anti-Defamation League, and the New York Civil Liberties Union.

It also published responses to the historic day’s rulings from others in the LGBT community, like LGBT activist and cousin of Chief Justice John Roberts; the plaintiffs in DeBoer v. Snyder – which may end Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage; and the owners of a North Carolina-based international china replacement outlet, who accidentally became LGBT activists by just raising a family and living their lives.

Overall, The New Civil Rights Movement works to bridge the gap between blogs and mainstream news sites, which helps both LGBT and non-LGBT people see and understand the LGBT community’s issues more clearly.
