Police Chief Fired For Being Gay: ‘Crushing’ To Hear Mayor’s Anti-Gay Attack (Video)

The South Carolina police chief who was fired last week, presumably because she is a lesbian, said it was “crushing” to hear the mayor’s anti-gay comments. Crystal Moore, formerly the town of Latta’s top cop, listened to a lengthy recording of Mayor Earl Bullard’s attack on gay people on MSNBC last night and told Ari Melber how she felt.

Melber reports that Mayor Bullard both denies firing Moore because she is gay, and would neither confirm nor deny that he made the comments played in the audio recording.

Moore says she was told in secret that she needed to watch her back when Bullard was elected, yet she continued to do her job. “I didn’t let it hinder me, I continued to do the job that I’d been doing for Latta in the past years.”

Here are the comments believed to have been made by Mayor Bullard:

“I would much rather have.. and I will say this to anybody’s face… somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody whose lifestyle is questionable around children.

“Because that ain’t the damn way it’s supposed to be. You know…you got people out there — I’m telling you buddy — I don’t agree with some of the lifestyles that I see portrayed and I don’t say anything because that is the way they want to live, but I am not going to let my child be around.

“I’m not going to let two women stand up there and hold hands and let my child be aware of it. And I’m not going to see them do it with two men neither.”

“I’m not going to do it. Because that ain’t the way the world works.

“Now, all these people showering down and saying ‘Oh it’s a different lifestyle they can have it.’ Ok, fine and dandy, but I don’t have to look at it and I don’t want my child around it.”

South Carolina is not alone — in most states you can be fired for being LGBT.
