Economics and international politics are very complicated matters, so it’s usually best if you let experts handle complex issues. For instance, Courtney Love solving the mystery of missing Malaysia flight MH370, or Tony Perkins‘ theory on the intersection of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the fall of the U.S. economy, and Vladimir Putin marching into Crimea.
Tony Perkins, of course, is the head of the certified anti-gay hate group, Family Research Council. You were probably thinking he was a Nobel-prize-winning economist, or a statistician, but no, he’s the head of a so-called “pro-family” Evangelical Christian political lobbying group based in Washington, D.C., that networks like CNN, Fox, and MSNBC — for no apparent valid reason I could find – think has actual expertise, like a degree, in areas like health care, LGBT civil rights, politics, international relations, and economics.
Now, because all these things are very complex, you’ll want to pay close attention. Fortunately, our friends at Right Wing Watch have both the audio and transcript of Tony Perkins’ excellent dissection of the demise for America — which is more than we can say for the Malaysian government.
First, a quick overview of Perkins’ theory:
Step 1: President Obama repeals Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, “forcing the military to embrace open homosexuality.” Then, the mere knowledge that gay people exist in the U.S. military — gay people who already were in the U.S. military, fighting and dying for our freedoms — all of a sudden weaken the centuries-old institution.
Step 2: Obama “redefine[s] the definition of marriage,” allowing loving same-sex couples the right to marry, forcing hundreds of millions of dollars into the U.S economy thanks to all the weddings, gift registries, and home purchases, thereby weakening the centuries-old institution of marriage.
Step 3: Obama “pushe[s] his radical health care policy” through Congress, slowing the cost of health care and insuring millions of people, saving lives and reducing personal bankruptcies, saving the federal government $8 billion, yet somehow “draining our government of the resources it needs to perform its constitutionally mandated duties.”
Step 4: Vladimir Putin “makes a move” by marching into the Ukraine and annexing Crimea.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky.
Step 5: “Russia convinces China and others to move away from the US Dollar as the international standard,” and so, “here’s what happens: America is no longer able to just print money.”
Perkins says that “because everybody uses our standard, our dollar — we’re able to print more money.” But, as Perkins says, “as soon as … there’s no confidence in the dollar, this house of cards that has been built comes tumbling down.”
Get it?
Of course, the actual number one reason the world would lose confidence in the dollar is if Congress voted to not raise the debt ceiling and not pay its bills — money it had already spent, by the way. That causes the ratings agencies to lower the rating on the dollar and causes international panic, crashing markets worldwide.
So, naturally, it makes perfect sense that Perkins, who, coincidentally, is rumored to want to run for the U.S. House or Senate, announced last year that the man who shut the government down, Ted Cruz, “has become a de facto leader of the Republican Party. He is what people are looking for. Somebody who will stand up and say, ‘This is what I stand for, this is what I believe.’”
And, of course, that’s why Tony Perkins last year co-authored an op-ed in Politico, titled, “Why debt limit must be used to force a balanced budget,” writing that “we can quickly jump-start our economy and improve the lives of millions of Americans by insisting that Washington not raise the debt ceiling unless our nation gets on a path to a balanced budget within 10 years that stays balanced.”
OK, let’s finish up Perkins’ theory.
Step 6: “So there goes the economy all because we ignored the morality of the issues of this administration.”
Voilà !
