Tabloid ‘Source’: Part Of Phillip Seymour Hoffman ‘Wanted Heroin And The Gay Life’

The National Enquirer is claiming to have interviewed a well-known screenwriter and playwright, and supposedly published his comments that claim he was in a same-sex relationship with Philip Seymour Hoffman. The tabloid also claims a source said of the actor, “One part of him wanted a normal family life while another part wanted heroin and the gay life.” The screenwriter and playwright is denying the allegations or that the interview ever took place.

For the record, heroin isn’t part of the “gay life,” any more than it is part of the “straight life.”

Philip Seymour Hoffman, the 46-year old Academy Award winning actor, producer, director, who just days ago died of an apparent heroin overdose, was in a long-term relationship with the mother of his three children.

The well-known writer, David Bar Katz, has an extensive resume, including his work on Pyromaniac; A Love Story, Executive Decision, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and Spawn. He also is married with four children.

Radar Online reported this from the Enquirer:

Screenwriter David Bar Katz, the man who found the body of late Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, tells The National ENQUIRER he was in a gay relationship with the actor.

“We were homosexual lovers,” Katz, Hoffman’s friend and confidante, said in a new interview. “We had a relationship.”

Disgustingly, this is the scenario the Enquirer “source” painted, according to Radar:

A source told The ENQUIRER that Hoffman’s issues with drugs and his sexuality eventually put an end to his relationship with Mimi O’Donnell, his girlfriend of 15 years and the mother of his three kids.

“His drug use, and his ambivalence over whether he was straight or gay, drove a wedge between him and Mimi and broke them up,” the insider told The ENQUIRER. “One part of him wanted a normal family life while another part wanted heroin and the gay life.”

The NY Daily News reports that “David Bar Katz on Wednesday denied accounts that he and the Oscar-winning actor were romantically involved. ‘The Enquirer story is 100% false, including the claim that I gave the Enquirer an interview,’ Katz said in the statement.”

David Bar Katz actually found Philip Seymour Hoffman’s dead body. The Daily News says he “vows to sue” the Enquirer.

“Katz plans to sue the National Enquirer over ‘libelous’ reports that he and the actor were lovers,” the Daily News reports.

Why are we reporting on supermarket tabloid tales?

Because of their extensive audience, and because of this quote, supposedly from the Enquirer, which demands to be refuted:

“One part of him wanted a normal family life while another part wanted heroin and the gay life.”

That’s so offensive. There is no “gay life” or “straight life.” And heroin addiction doesn’t discriminate.

To claim that gay people are more likely to do drugs is disgusting and false. And to claim that it’s part of “gay life,” or to suggest that one has to be gay to live a “gay life” is equally disgusting and false.

The Enquirer apparently has struck out on this one, big time, and should be ashamed.
