Right now, there are hundreds of people rallying at the state capitol in Arizona in protest of SB 1062, the anti-gay legislation awaiting Gov. Jan Brewer‘s signature — or veto. The bill, which passed both the Arizona Senate and House this week, allows anyone to discriminate against anyone else, if they claim they are doing so based upon their deeply held religious beliefs.
Several Democratic mayors along with three Republican gubernatorial candidates have come out against Governor Brewer signing SB 1062 into law. The Governor said she would consider the merits of the “very controversial” bill and decide by next Friday. Technically, however, some say she has only until mid-week to sign or veto, or the bill automatically become law.
Protestors are gathering not only at the state capitol, but in other cities, including Yuma and Tucson, the site of Rocco’s, a now-famous pizza restaurant that today posted a sign on their front door stating, “we reserve the right to refuse service to Arizona legislators.”
