Grammy Winner And Gay Anthem Rapper Macklemore Accused Of Tweeting Homophobia

There are times when you just want to bang your head against the wall over other people’s willful stupidity, ignorance, and the ease with which they will drop support for an ally.

America has become so scandal-focused the masses look to discredit heroes without even an attempt to understand.

VIDEO: Watch: 33 Gay And Straight Couples Marry At Grammys As Macklemore And Madonna Sing

Take the case of Ben Haggerty, the rap artist and Grammy winner known as Macklemore. Last night, before 33 couples — gay and straight — married on national television at the Grammys, Macklemore sung an impassioned version of his gay anthem, “Same Love.”

Today on Twitter, someone dug up a tweet Macklemore sent in 2009.

Here it is:

Scandal! Of course, it was four years ago, so given his contributions to the LGBT community and to expanding minds toward diversity, most folks might just let it go — or use, you know, the Google machine. Or, even just ask him. Not these folks though.

Over 1500 others retweeted the old tweet today, totally out of context, and without question, many of them just branded Macklemore a fake, a fraud, or someone who’s just in it for the money.

How sad and pathetic we have become, so willing to turn against someone without nary a question.

Fortunately, some folks did the questioning, and it turns out that Macklemore, when he sent that 2009 tweet, was watching a gay pride fundraising baseball game, billed as, yes, “Dykes vs. Drag Queens.”

There’s “news” of another Macklemore tweet that’s floating around:

Clearly, it’s tongue in cheek, but it’s making headlines too.

This “scandal” is so big the Washington Post is actually reporting on it — fortunately, they’re being responsible journalists and offered this:

Of Macklemore’s 15,510 tweets, fewer than two dozen ever use the word “gay.” They are almost exclusively about gay marriage. (In November 2011, Macklemore tweeted to a fellow musician that he unfollowed him because “you still say ‘gay’ on Twitter … as in ‘that was gay.’”)

The exception is that “no homo” joke, which many have called homophobic. (“Yes, I know it’s a 4-5 year old tweet. But it speaks to his current attitude and engagement with the LGBTQ movement,” one Gawker commenter griped.) But the tweet can also be read as a joke about people who idiotically say “no homo.” It’s hard to tell, given the lack of context and tone online — something Macklemore should maybe keep in mind going forward — but all the uncharacteristic exclamation points would imply a certain level of sarcasm.

So, is Macklemore a fake, a fraud, just in it for the money? Or are some people just easily swayed and willfully ignorant, unable to do one lick of research before jumping to conclusions?

Clearly, Macklemore is a strong ally and the victim of a mob mentality.

This, my friends, is how Republicans win elections: By planting stupid ideas into unquestioning minds.
