Governor Chris Christie announced in an 11 AM press conference that he has fired the top aide named as a key figure in “Bridgegate.” Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly, according to emails obtained by the Bergen Record, a local New Jersey paper, had written an email stating, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.”

The Governor said he fired Kelly because “she lied to me,” and saids he is “heartbroken” over the breach of trust.

“I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge,” Christie said in a statement.

Christie said he will today visit the community of Fort Lee, that was the target of lane closures on the George Washington Bridge as political retribution and revenge because Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich refused to endorse the Governor’s reelection. He said he will apologize to the Mayor and the citizens who were horribly impacted.

“Actions have consequences, and I’m living up to that right now.” He repeatedly stated had no knowledge of the bridge closings, and decried the “callous” manner in which Fort Lee was treated.

Christie claimed that he never saw this event as political retribution because he was not seeking the endorsement of the Fort Lee mayor.

Federal prosecutor Paul J. Fishman, the United States attorney for New Jersey, has announced he will investigate the lane closures of the bridge.

Yesterday it was revealed that at least four emergency services incidents were impacted by the bridge closure, including a 91-year old woman who later died.
