GOP Strategist Defends Putin Anti-Gay Laws: ‘My Gay Friends Think He Looks So Buff Shirtless’

Top GOP strategist Mary Matalin on Sunday defended Vladimir Putin and his anti-gay laws. The Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43, and Cheney political consultant found it hard to understand why America — or Putin — is even talking about the Putin crackdown and draconian laws criminalizing Russia’s LGBT community, claiming her gay friends just think the 61-year old Russian President is a sexually attractive.

“Can I just say, I’m so sick of sports and politics,” Matalin said on ABC News’ “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.”

“All of my gay friends think he looks so buff when he is shirtless. Why is he even talking about this?”

Matalin’s comments came right after the segment in which Stephanopoulos interviewed the Russia president, who claimed his anti-gay law “does not hurt anyone,” and gay people in his country “cannot feel like second-rate humans in this country because they are not discriminated against in any way.”

After the 2012 election, Matalin labeled President Obama a “political narcissistic sociopath” who “leveraged fear and ignorance.”

And in December 2009, hopping on the Republican history-rewriting train, Matalin, who had worked for Vice President Dick Cheney, claimed President Bush had “inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation’s history.”

That’s “inherited,” not, “was President during.”
