GOP Lawmaker Suggests ‘Gay Sex’ Like ‘8 of Your Friends’ Taking ‘A Dump in Your Bed’

South Dakota Republican state legislator Steve Hickey is back in the news today, after receiving national attention last week for calling “gay sex” “a one way alley for the garbage truck.” Rep. Hickey had made those remarks in both a Facebook post and an identical letter to the editor he submitted to the Argus Leader, a local Sioux Falls newspaper. 

Rep. Hickey yesterday sat down with the managing editor of that paper for a video interview.

During the interview, Rep. Hickey posed a question to a local doctor and — speaking about sex between two men — asked, “is it OK for, you know, eight of your friends that you’re in love with to take a dump in your bed and then you can sleep in it all year long?”

In the 39-minute conversation with the Argus Leader, Hickey also laments that he has been attacked in the press and via social media for his attacks on same-sex marriage, homosexuality, and anal sex, which he labels “gay sex.” “Who’s demonizing who?,” Hickey complains.

“The phrase I used about a garbage truck is as clean as you can get to talk about as dirty as we’re talking about,” Hickey told managing editor Patrick Lalley. “I find it to be a fake outrage from the crowd that gives us pride parades with in-your-face shock value obscenity and vulgarity down Main Street America.”

Rep. Hickey, who, when not acting in his role as a lawmaker, is a Christian pastor, laments that “the face of [same-sex marriage] has been two wonderful old ladies who have been in a same-sex relationship for many years.” Pastor Hickey says the real “face” of same-sex marriage is far different, and that it’s “self-evident” that homosexuality is “a deviation” from nature.

Editor Lalley told Hickey, “you’re equating gay marriage with anal sex, and the two aren’t necessarily equated. Heterosexuals can have anal sex, and not every homosexual couple — male or female — is going to engage in the act.”

Hickey suggests that women engaging in anal sex are suffering from “degradation.”

“Pushing women down, and facing them the other way” he tells Lalley.

Hickey also claims that doctors tell him gay men “have higher rates of colostomy bags” and “a 20-year less lifespan.” Hickey claims an article in the Journal of Sex Research says “the mean number of sex partners for homosexual males is 251.” Hickey goes on to claim that he has a report that “talks about the dangers of both lesbian and male sex.”

Hickey also talks about the need for the family — namely, one man, one woman headed households — being necessary to prevent “extinction” of mankind.

He also claimed to have a study that says that 81 percent of married men are faithful to their spouses, but only fifteen percent of “homosexual relationships” last ten or more years.

Hickey says that same-sex marriage has “financial ramifications, it has social ramifications,” and he says he cares “about the kids.”

“We’re talking about a lack of stability in gay relationships,” Hickey says, but “the family unit is the best thing.”

He calls male same-sex couples raising kids “self-gratification for men who can’t control themselves.” He also likened prohibitions on same-sex marriage to prohibitions on incest.

Rep. Hickey also, pointing to a paper on a table, claimed that “homosexual is 14 times worse” when it comes to sexually-transmitted diseases. That claim, Hickey said, comes from Dr. John R. Diggs.

John R. Diggs, Jr., M.D., wrote “The Health Risks of Gay Sex” which was published online by the Catholic Education Resource Center in 2002. It quotes studies from 1978 and 1982, and 1984 — the height of the AIDS epidemic when little was known about HIV/AIDS.

Rep. Hickey also postulated a conspiracy theory that homosexuality was removed from the APA’s list of mental disorders “the same year we got Roe v. Wade. Interesting,” he exclaimed.

Hickey also says that “ex-gay” people “absolutely” exist. He is clearly unaware that the nation’s top “ex-gay” groups have disbanded and admitted they were wrong. But Rep. Hickey is not a researcher and delights in finding “evidence” online to support his pre-conceived notions, rather that taking the time to consult with actual experts to learn the truth.

As for all of Hickey’s claims, regardless of whether or not he has “studies” to “prove” his claims, we believe they clearly are all false, based on present-day science, and believe it is beyond irresponsible for Rep. Hickey to present these “studies” as present-day fact. If he would like to contact us to show us the sources of his claims we are happy to examine them.

The New Civil Rights Movement reached out to the Journal of Sex Research to ask them to attempt to locate the article Rep. Hickey claims he saw. They are looking an we’ll update this article when we hear back.
