Fox News Compares Atheists To Hitler’s Germany (Video)

While some cable news channels had their chief legal correspondents and reporters explain to viewers what yesterday’s Supreme Court decision allowing prayer in local town meetings meant, Fox News invited its religion reporter to interpret the Justices’ 5-4 decision.

Todd Starnes appeared on “Hannity” last night, and seemed more intent on pushing his latest book, God Less America: Real Stories From the Front Lines of the Attack on Traditional Values, than actually explaining what implications the SCOTUS decision might have. In fact, Starnes deflected all the legal questions from guest host Eric Bolling, and even seemed unprepared to answer them, merely concluding that it’s “[a]lways a good day when the anti-Christian folks get smacked down by the Supreme Court.”

But one point Starnes had no trouble making was his comparison of atheists who are trying to maintain a wall of separation between church and state, with Hitler’s Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy.

Claiming “the Obama administration has been waging a war against people of the Christian faith,” Starnes noted that “war” is “not covered in the mainstream media, it’s covered here at the Fox News Channel.”

Starnes said that atheists might try to have the words “endowed by our creator” removed from our “founding documents.”

“Let’s say the atheists are successful in removing ‘Creator’ out of that sentence, alright?” Starnes said. “Who do we put in there? I mean, look, the Germans tried it with Hitler. It didn’t work out very well with them. Look at what happened in Italy.”

The Raw Story notes, however, that Starnes is just plain wrong:

In fact, Adolf Hitler often mentioned religion in public speeches, and insisted that God was backing his policies.

“Lord God, give us the strength that we may retain our liberty for our children and our children’s children, not only for ourselves but also for the other peoples of Europe, for this is a war which we all wage, this time, not for our German people alone, it is a war for all of Europe and with it, in the long run, for all of mankind,” the dictator prayed at the conclusion of a 1942 speech in Berlin.
