Fighting Same-Sex Marriage Is Just Like Fighting Slavery Says NOM At Utah Rally

var addthis_config = {“data_track_addressbar”:true};The ‘True Civil Rights’ Movement is the movement fighting against marriage equality claims NOM President

“Remember who you are. Remember our history,” bleated National Organization For Marriage (NOM) president Brian Brown at an anti-gay marriage rally in Utah this week. The event was attended by a reported 700 people, some of whom were holding up signs that read, “Biology is not bigotry” and “Marriage means a mother and a father for every child.”

Also present were 400 pro-equality supporters, some of whom can be seen holding up equality signs in the upper portion of the video, below.

Brown attempted to veil his anti-gay bigotry under a crown of religious righteousness, claiming, “I would say that it’s pretty likely that those of us here share some respect for our savior, Jesus Christ.”

To cheers, Brown said it is “a lie and it is wrong” to say that religious claims of faith which attack the right of same-sex couples to marry should not be voiced in a building like the state capitol.

“Throughout history, people of faith have stood up against gross injustices, stood up for true civil rights,” the highly-compensated NOM president said. “We stand up for the civil rights for all when we stand up for the truth about marriage.”

And throughout his speech, Brown consistently compared his fight against marriage equality to the historic fight against slavery, “going all the way back to Rome,” when the gladiators fought Christians.

“Christians stood up and they said, ‘No.’ People of faith came together and said, ‘There is something profoundly wrong with an empire that is trading in the flesh of human beings. We will organize. We will fight.’”

Of course, just like the slave traders themselves, Brown is on the wrong side of history, and framing the “debate” as a religious crusade is a hypocrisy so deep it boggles the mind.

Jeremy Hooper at Good As You sarcastically noted that “if you don’t see that this is a deliberate effort on the part of the anti-LGBT movement to make us and our rights sound like the modern day equivalent of history’s worst wrongs, then you are simply not paying attention.”

Event supporters used the hashtag #StandWithChildren to demonstrate their support.
