Evangelical Christian Kirk Cameron Says ‘Fornicators And Adulterers’ Worse Than Gay Marriage

It wasn’t long ago that Kirk Cameron, the “Growing Pains” teen star who became a Christian evangelical, was targeting same-sex marriage and gay people. Well, those days, for now, are behind him. Cameron has not come out in support of same-sex marriage — not even close. But the older and wiser Cameron — he’s 43 now — says in a recent interview that same-sex marriage is not at the top of his list anymore.

Of course, it wasn’t long ago that Cameron was the subject of outrage from much of America. He insisted on labeling gay people “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization,” and “unnatural,” then doubling down by claiming that was actually actually “love speech,” not hate speech. He later said, “I love all people,” and claimed he was a victim of the media.

But recently, a softer, or, at least, alternately focused Cameron has been on display.

“When people get too focused on redefining marriage, you’re distracted from the bigger problem – fornicators and adulterers,” Cameron last week told Greg Garrison at AL.com. “If the people sitting in the pews are fornicators and adulterers, the church will destroy marriages much more quickly than those outside the church. When God’s people mock marriage, God doesn’t take that lightly.”

Cameron apparently has a direct line to God, having been blessed with a large family and a ministry that allows him to travel the country offering Christian advice. Cameron’s website is part of the Liberty Alliance, a large group of anti-gay right wing Christian sites often hell-bent on attacking liberals and same-sex marriage. One of the most recent additions, Matt Barber’s BarbWire, features articles like “‘GAY’ BISHOP PRETEND DIVORCES PRETEND HUSBAND,” and “HOMOFASCISM RISING: PASADENA PUBLIC HEALTH DIRECTOR SUSPENDED FOR ‘HOMOPHOBIC’ SERMON.” (Most hyperbolic right-wing “news” sites, like BarbWire and Breitbart, insist on USING ALL CAPS.)

And recently, Cameron recorded an ad for the Alliance Defending Freedom, the legal group that supported Prop 8 all the way to the Supreme Court. The 30-minute infomercial that is essentially a mini-movie begging for money, actually attacks the ACLU and other civil rights groups.
