Canada Bars Entry To US Anti-Gay Hate Group Leader

Peter LaBarbera is claiming that Canada has barred him from entering their country because they believe he will violate their hate speech laws. Unlike the United States, where our First Amendment does not allow laws specifically banning hate speech, many countries around the world do — Canada being one.

Claiming he was flying into Canada to deliver a speech at the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association conference, LaBarbera accuses Canadian customs officials of denying him entry after “rifling through my luggage, which contained numerous books and literature related to homosexuality (pro and con); examining the contents of my laptop and my cell phone; playing a DVD of my speech Wednesday at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio; and critically viewing AFTAH’s website.”

LaBarbera’s group (he seems to be the only active member), Americans For Truth about Homosexuality (AFTAH), is listed on the pages of the Southern Poverty Law Center as an active anti-gay hate group.

He adds that his “passport was seized ” and “a preliminary decision was made to deny my entrance into Canada on the basis that my speech at the SPLA would violate Canada’s ‘Hate Propaganda’ law (essentially the potential for ‘public incitement of hatred’ against a group of people based on their “sexual orientation”).”

Shockingly, in his defense, he writes:

As an evangelical Christian, I believe that all people, including homosexuals, must be treated with respect and the grace of Christ.

Really?

LaBarbera called “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Robert’s announcement that she is in a long-term same-sex relationship a “tragedy.” He has claimed that gays, or, as he calls them, “homosexual activists,” are are “doing to Christians” what the “Nazis used to do to the Jews.” He has called for the impeachment of “dictator” Obama for a “blasphemous” “celebration of homosexuality.” And he has said “Homo-fascism” and “homo-communism” are all part of “Satan’s plan.”
