Despite Florida‘s despicable election system and the fact that they are the only state to not have finished their election day counting (New York and New Jersey, wrecked by Hurricane Sandy, performed extremely well), Mitt Romney has officially now conceded Florida to Barack Obama, giving the President the majority of the popular vote, based on estimated results from the Sunshine State.

Currently, the results stand at 50.4% for President Obama, 48% for Mitt Romney. We can expect those numbers to rise for the President after the weekend, when Florida has stated they will finally complete counting. Obama also gets Florida’s 29 electoral votes, giving him 332, against Mitt Romney’s 206.
“During a conference call on Thursday, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told reporters he was confident the president would be named the official winner in Florida, pointing to a boost from Latino and youth voters and having won the messaging war on Medicare, Sabrina Siddiqui at The Huffington Post reported:
With a win in Florida, Obama finishes the election with 332 electoral votes, just 33 fewer than he won in his victory in 2008. He also won every battleground state except North Carolina.
In the 2008 election, Barack Obama won 52.9% of the popular vote, against John McCain’s 45.7%. Obama won 365 electoral votes, John McCain 173.
The President was given a clear mandate to continue and advance a progressive agenda, as evidenced by voters’ support of same-sex marriage and refusal to ban the institution, voters tossing out Republican candidates who were anti-women — the so-called “rape caucus” — and voters turning out anti-gay mayors like Janice Daniels, while electing an historic number of women and LGBT people across the nation.
Remember this when the Tea Party, Republicans, and conservatives claim Obama “barely won,” or that he “squeaked by,” and that he does not have a mandate.
