Why Does The Right Think Americans Are Stupid?

I’ve been taking a bit of a longer view of events the past few weeks. “Taking it all in,” as it were. And I’ve come to an irrefutable position: The Right thinks the average American is stupid, incapable of self-control, desirous of anything made legal, and willing to swallow whatever is put before him. What’s worse, their continued refusal to improve the lot of average Americans, through their incredible insistence that government-sponsored education, regulation, and taxes are all evil, simply fuels their insistence that Americans cannot make decisions for themselves. And this is hurting us, but it hurts the LGBTQ community more. Here’s why. Recently, Iowa Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said gay marriage is “a radical social idea” and “a purely socialist concept.”

Really? How can anyone come to that stupid conclusion?

But let’s look at some other comments King has made: “I think that the argument that there is a civil right to same-sex marriage is not based upon a rational thought process.” “…everyone has an equal right to get married to a member of the opposite sex, because after all that is marriage, and I’m not willing to go down the path of seeking to redefine something that all of human history and experience has already defined.”

Iowans do not have “a very good understanding of what same-sex marriage does to the overall institution of marriage.” “Along with a constitutional amendment, the legislature must also enact marriage license residency requirements so that Iowa does not become the gay marriage Mecca due to the Supreme Court’s latest experiment in social engineering.”

And then this, King’s hateful crescendo: “…if there’s a right to same-sex marriage, if that right exists then that means Rick Santorum was right. The right also exists for any other relationship that one might argue. Then there would exist no ban, no rational foundation to prohibit incest, for example, between father and a son or a daughter or a mother and a son or daughter, for example or brothers and sisters.

And that, my friends, is why the Right thinks Americans are stupid. You and I know that same sex marriage doesn’t lead to socialism, incest, bestiality or “any other relationship.” Same sex marriage leads to, well, marriage. Love. Support. Why would anyone think that if you legalize something it leads to something else? If we legalize pot, America will not become crack city. Americans are not going to quit their jobs, leave their families, and start shooting heroin. The poppy will not become the national flower. Do you, personally, think if pot were legalized, you would all of a sudden develop a desir to smoke pot? Of course not. All that would happen were we to legalize pot is that a few more people might try it.

And, we could tax it, which would be great. If you’re straight, right now, ask yourself this: If gay marriage becomes legal across this great land of ours, will I become gay? Will I want to leave my spouse, switch sides, and marry a person of the same gender? Will I hit on my mother or father? Will I, to quote the unfortunate misstep of a local NYC anchorman, want to fuck a chicken? If you answer “yes,” to any of these questions, then you have some other issues, but you don’t have an issue with same-sex marriage.
